Sara Phoenix has been involved in theatre as an actress, teacher, director, and choreographer for 25 years. She currently serves as Executive Artistic Director of Theatre Tulsa in Tulsa, OK where the company is in the midst of its 92nd season. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Oklahoma. Over the years, she has directed and choreographed over 60 productions for various theatres and schools, serving as a high school theatre teacher and an award-winning free-lance director and choreographer. Sara has twice been involved with productions that won top honors at the national AACT Festival, most recently as director of a production of John and Jen for the Poteet Theatre in Oklahoma City. Both of these productions were invited to travel to Germany to participate in the International USAAF Festival. In addition to her work at Theatre Tulsa, Sara enjoys being the mother of four-year-old twins and serving on the Board of Directors for AACT as chairman of the Education Committee. Sara is an associate member of The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.
Until her retirement this past November, Kathy Pingel was the Director of Education and Youth Programming at the Des Moines Community Playhouse for 10 years. She also served as Artistic Director of the Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre. She holds a BA in theatre from Eastern Michigan University where she studied with Virginia Koste and a MA from Northwestern University in Performance Studies where she worked with Frank Galati. She also holds an MA in teaching from Northwestern. After graduation, she taught at New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL, and Southern Illinois University. She then worked as a freelance director and did a year-long stint as Outreach Coordinator for Orlando Repertory Theatre before settling in Iowa. At the Des Moines Playhouse, Kathy directed over 50 productions including Anne of Green Gables, Holes, Don’t Dress for Dinner, Cinderella, Biloxi Blues, Dinner with Friends and Sound of Music. As Education Director the Playhouse, Kathy piloted many new programs including classes for students on the autism spectrum, a repertory company for senior radio performers, and workshops to teach creative problem-solving to corporate teams. She also created Spotlight: Literacy, a program designed to help teachers expand language arts activities with trips to the Goldman Theatre. Kathy has adjudicated at the state and regional, national and international levels for the American Association of Community Theatre. She facilitated AACT’s Theatre Education Directors Conference in August 2010 and continues to serve on the Education Committee. At the Region III Annual Meeting in Midland, Michigan, the state representatives drew the performance order for the 2017 Region III Festival.  If a state does not have two representatives to the Regional Festival, the extraneous slots will be deleted and the remaining slots moved forward.  States with two representatives will determine which company will be the "1" slot and the "2" slot by the flip of a coin.
